In 1876 there were many celebrations to commemorate the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, 1776. As part of this patriotic fervor, a group of men in the San Francisco, California area, who were descendants of Patriots involved in the American Revolution, formed an organization called the “Sons of Revolutionary Sires.” Their objective was to create a fraternal and civic society to salute the men and women who pledged their lives, fortunes and their sacred honor to the battle for independence from Great Britain.
Out of the “Sires” grew the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution which was organized on April 30, 1889 - the 100th Anniversary of the inauguration of George Washington as our nation's first President. We have used the acronym SAR to identify ourselves for over 100 years. The SAR was conceived as a fraternal and civic society composed of lineal descendants of the men who signed the Declaration of Independence, fought the battles of the American Revolution, wintered at Valley Forge and other encampments, served in the Continental Congress, or otherwise supported the cause of American Independence.
The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (NSSAR) was chartered by an Act of the United States Congress on June 9, 1906. The charter was signed by President Theodore Roosevelt, who was a member of the SAR. The charter authorizes the granting of charters to societies of the various states, and territories, and authorizes the state societies to charter societies within their borders.
At the signing of the Act of Congress, all but six Presidents of the United States were Patriots, sons or grandsons of Patriots, and qualified by lineage for membership in the SAR. Six Presidents were real sons of Revolutionary War Patriots. Five were grandsons of Revolutionary War Patriots and one was the great grandson of a Revolutionary War Patriot. In total, fourteen United States Presidents having Revolutionary War period lineage have become members of the SAR since its original formation.
The Palm Beach Chapter, Florida Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) was formed by its original 19 members at the Everglades Club, Palm Beach, on March 19, 1938. As of 2015, the Palm Beach Chapter is the largest of the thirty chapters comprising the Florida Society, SAR.
The Palm Beach Chapter holds its regular meetings, consisting of a luncheon and an appropriate program, on the third Tuesday of each month, at 12:00 noon, at the Embassy Suites Hotel, 1601 Belvedere Road, West Palm Beach, Florida, from October through May.
Our Society must remain a strong and sturdy instrument for a Conservative Constitutional Government.
Our forefathers fought for and won this freedom and we strive to protect and preserve this precious gift.
Membership in the National and State Societies and local Chapters of the Sons of the American Revolution is an opportunity to aid in this duty. We need you, your sons, fathers, relatives and friends to help maintain a strong and powerful force to foster true patriotism and maintain and extend the institution of American freedom.
