What is the American History Teacher Contest?
The Florida Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (FLSSAR) formally invites American history teachers instructing students in grades 6–12 to participate in its annual American History Teacher Contest.
The award consists of two separate contests designed to select a teacher at the middle school and high school level.
Teachers submit an essay describing the exceptional instructional methods or innovative projects they employ to educate students about the people, events, and historical significance of the American Revolutionary War era.
Cash prizes are awarded at the local, state, and national levels.
Who can participate?
The American History Teacher Contest is open to all teachers instructing students in grades 6–12 whose approved curriculum covers the American Revolutionary era from 1750 to 1800. This free grant program is available to educators from public, charter, and private schools. Teachers who provide instruction exclusively through home school programs are not eligible to participate.
The contest seeks to recognize actively teaching educators who have a minimum of three years of teaching experience and are in the early to mid-stages of their careers, with several years of productive classroom instruction remaining.
What are the requirements?
All participants must complete the following entry requirements:
- Submit an original 500-to-1,000-word essay describing their most innovative instructional techniques and explaining why they believe it is important for today’s students to study the American Revolution.
- Provide at least one signed letter of recommendation from their principal or direct supervisor.
- Date, sign, and present a contest application and release form.
- Include a digital photograph to be used for publicity by the Sons of the American Revolution.
Additional Requirements:
- All entries must feature original content.
- Plagiarized or AI-generated works are not permitted.
- Only one entry per teacher is permitted per contest year.
How do I enter?
The contest takes place across three levels, beginning with your local chapter. Local chapter winners advance to the state-level competition, and each state winner then moves on to the SAR National Competition to compete for national awards.
All entries must be submitted through a local chapter to begin the competition process.
Please note that local application deadlines vary, so interested teachers should contact their nearest chapter for specific submission dates and details.

What Can I Win?
Top entries earn cash prizes at the local, state, and national levels! Each local chapter sets its own prize amounts, and chapter winners advance to the state competition.
State-Level Prizes:
- Middle School: $750 cash
- High School: $750 cash
The state winner will advance to the national competition, where prize amounts are determined and awarded by the National Society to first, second, and third place winners at the middle and high school level.
First-place winners at the national level also receive a professional educational opportunity at a national seminar including the Freedoms Foundation Summer Teacher Graduate Workshop at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania; the Colonial Williamsburg Summer Teacher Workshop in Williamsburg, Virginia; or the SAR Annual Conference on the American Revolution.
