Minute Man Living History Association, National Park Service
The society welcomes members of all race, age, color, religion, national origin, nation of citizenship or residency. To quote the bylaws of our national society, “Any male shall be eligible for membership in the SAR who is a citizen of good repute in the community; and a lineal descendant of an ancestor who was at all times unfailing in loyalty to and rendered acceptable service in the cause of American Independence.”
The process begins by gathering and documenting your lineage with official records — such as birth, marriage, death certificates, and census data — for every generation from yourself back to that ancestor, ensuring each link is verifiable. Next, contact your local chapter for guidance; they will help to review your preliminary evidence, assist with the official application form available on the national website, and often connect you with a genealogist if needed.
Once your paperwork is complete and endorsed by the chapter, it is submitted to the state and national societies for approval, which typically takes a few months; upon acceptance, you will receive your membership number, pay initial dues (varying by state and national levels, often around $100–$200 for the first year). You also will gain access to the society’s events, resources, and lineage preservation efforts. This structured path not only preserves your family’s heritage but also connects you to a network dedicated to honoring America’s founding legacy.
